The Community Piano Program at UBC began on January 2000 with one single beginners' class. It is modeled after the preparatory programs at various universities in the US, where piano teachers were trained.

Our Mission:
  • To provide well-rounded piano education suitable to individual needs
  • To instill music appreciation and enjoyment through peer learning & exciting materials
  • To train student teachers

Beginner I & II Courses
will be offered to 7 to 9 year olds with maximum class size of 8 & minimum of 5 (grouped according to school grade), include:

Group classes:
  • 30 Weekly 60-min.
  • Conducted in a multi-keyboard lab at the School of Music
  • Contents: music learning activities and regular casual performance opportunities, games in music theory & ear-training

Private lessons:

  • 30 weekly 30 or 45-min.
  • Taught on acoustic pianos by selected advanced piano majors in the graduate or undergraduate program of the School of Music
  • Coordinated with group class and supervised by faculty

Private lessons:

6 / 45 or 60-min. in May and June with the faculty when group lessons are over.   
These will provide:

  • A chance for the faculty to reassess each student and plan for the future year
  • A time for learning at individual pace and focus on repertoire

Formal Recital Performances in the Gessler Hall in the School of Music
Assessment interview is required to determine suitability and readiness.
